The delegation from Kanaky (as they term New Caledonia) was here to speak of the most recent ugliness of Macron on their island to the Indigenous Kanak people back in 2024 - lack of services of food, medicines, transport - barricades set up by the colonials - a system of apartheid in truth - the gaoling of young people - removed many of them to France where some have since been released but not returned home - left to fend for themselves or else otherwise reliant on charitable organisations for basic sustenance - no documentation - I kept thinking - how similar to what is going on in the West Bank. Though 40% of the population - with control over only 20% of the land - they make up 90% of those in prison in New Caledonia/Kanaky. It was a sobering presentation - supported by First Australians and other activist organisations their week-long visit went from Sydney to Melbourne - up to Brisbane and back to Newcastle - they are now back home. To what reception I wonder. Australian unions and Australian media scarcely mention the situation - neither NITV (National Indigenous TV) SBS nor the national ABC. It is impossible to send relief - medicines, other necessaries, even via container - because it is automatically impounded/seized by the authorities.
