I understand pessimism in light of the UN vote and the events that caused it. My sense about China's and Russia's abstention is that they have pretty much given up on the international body. Their vote was a "Whatever. You guys do what you have to do. We're going to take a walk."

As for China and Russia, please don't fall into the capitalist trope that China is not a socialist/Communist country. "Socialism with Chinese characteristics" is a recognition that every country's socialism will be unique to its prevailing conditions. This is straight out of Marx. China's is a mixed economy and while there are problems, she is doing quite well.

I believe that Russia never abandoned Soviet communism, they just accommodated the West, and as a people they have not abandoned the 'faith' in communal cooperation, just augmenting it with faith in Christianity and Islam, maybe Judaism, and who knows what other spiritual traditions. For one thing, Russia could not have ever dominated the battlefield in its ongoing war with NATO without belief in Mother Russia, a collective entity going back thousands of years. Nor could her military industries produce if they held capitalism's profit motive. Actually, what holds Russia back are remnants of Atlanticism, including the neoliberalism of the Central Bank.

These nations see the writing on the wall and are desperate to save their own asses.

They realize that the US/Zionist cabal are vicious and adhere to no humane principles whatsoever. They don't want to end up like Libya, Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Venezuela or Cuba (amongst other who have suffered under the bootheel of the US/Zionist war machine since the turn of the century).

This is the guiding principle for America......'We are the United States. We are the most powerful country in the history of the world. We stand taller and see further. You will do what we tell you to do. If you don't, we will smash your face in.' And our little sidekick the State of Israel (the world's foremost state sponsor of terrorism) behaves exactly the same way.
