"Socialism with Chinese characteristics" is a recognition that every country's socialism will be unique to its prevailing conditions. This is straight out of Marx. I believe that Russia never abandoned Soviet communism, they just accommodated the West, and as a people they have not abandoned the 'faith' in communal cooperation, just augmenting it with faith in Christianity and Islam, maybe Judaism, and who knows what other spiritual traditions.
