If propaganda is so pervasive and ubiquitous, and I agree is absolutely pervasive and ubiquitous, what are then the factors allowing some individuals to escape its suffocating clutch, while the mass stay prisoner? Has any kind of serious scientific analysis ever been done on the subject?

Gpcus, your first question really gets to the heart of the matter. Glenn Greenwald has recently talked about his obsession with the Pentagon Papers while growing up. Apparently, Daniel Ellsberg was a childhood hero. I mention this because Greenwald's innate curiosity, intellectual rigor, and passion for civil liberties (all qualities he had from a reasonably young age) made it unlikely he would be susceptible to propaganda. So I think some people are more immune because of their own individual traits, and a natural and healthy skepticism they have toward power.

But for myself, and I think for many of us, there is a moment of awakening, a moment in which we start to understand the extent to which we've been lied to--and why we've been lied to and who those lies serve. And it's a very fortunate and profound moment when it happens, because it's hard to break free of propaganda. But once you see the lies, and the extent of the lies, and how power is served by those lies, its impossible to unsee all of this. I really admire the work Caitlin Johnstone does because she believes in the possibility that people can wake up and she does everything she can to help make that possible.

Lastly, I personally think that one of the dynamics that keeps Americans bamboozled by propaganda is their loyalty to one of the two major political parties. Both parties are cesspits of propaganda and it isn't possible to remain loyal to either party and be free of the influence of propaganda.

These are just some of my thoughts. Thank you for your comment.

Agreed! Have we escaped or are we merely the victims of a different type of propaganda? I think that our author here is preaching to the choir; we have all drank from a different pitcher of Kool Aid. If, however, this community here is one of "free thought" and "enlightenment" how do we (re?)deprogram our fellow citizens that they may break the shackles of "bad" propaganda that permeates the western culture and live free and enlightened? (As snarky as this comment may sound I seriously think it is the defining dilemma of our time.)

I might add it also has to do with fascism and a long standing hatred of Russia. Since the Ukraine war we are seeing how deeply rooted fascism is in the West. We defeated Hitler but we didn't defeat fascism .

Here in Canada we are just learning how fascism has infiltrated our government and its roots date back to WW ll. In many ways we are fighting a sequel to WW ll with much much more at stake

Robert, Thanks for your comment. Yes, I think Russophobia is a driving factor in U.S. foreign policy in general. It certainly has a lot do with why Americans have supported Ukraine without any hesitancy or critical questioning or indeed any awareness of American's role in provoking it.

It is also true that Nazism was not entirely defeated and that it was imported to the U.S. and other western countries when Nazis were brought in to advance scientific and industrial expansion. The CIA employed Nazis, bringing them into the organization, at the beginning of the Cold War is it ramped up its covert war against the Soviet Union.

Cara,

Keep in mind that group identity is as often a function of what is being opposed, as core attraction. Carrot and stick. So having that other, scapegoat, foreign boogyman is a tool the communal managers like to have and use, to herd the group.

The current dynamic is certainly interesting, as the Security State is always having to find enemies to justify its existence, the internal social dynamic of the US, over the last fifty years, is that the rebellious liberalism of the Baby Boomers has congealed into the political consensus of the establishment.

So not only are the Russians/Soviets, Chinese/Communists, Iran, Arab Terrorists, etc. all being pushed into the same corner, but so is the conservative half of our own society, as well as those who see through the corruption.

While it seems useful to the establishment that Donald Trump has risen as their leader, given his lack of any gravitas, it has also inspired them to shed any remaining sense of decency and respectability in trying to manufacture that scapegoat out of what amounts to basic American principles. Both those that should be reconsidered, such as racism, as well as the foundational ones, like free speech.

Seems like they are setting and baiting their own trap.

John, good point about the need for scapegoats and the dynamics involved. I do think when discussing the so-called "right" or Republicans it's important to distinguish between the establishment wing, which is hardly indistinguishable from their Democratic counterparts, certainly where foreign policy is concerned, and the rise of populism which Trump represents. Thanks for all of your other comments as well.

Cara,

One way to think about it is being under water and staring up toward the surface, as fish swim by and particles reflect the light.

Rather than seeing the political brands and trying to unravel what they are trying to say, think they are doing, etc, you sense more of the essentially thermodynamic forces driving them.

Personally I grew up on a farm, around more animals than people and a lot of older siblings, so my sense of the politics, the conflicts, the controlling, herding, managing, healthy and unhealthy actions, etc, is organic. Both being part of the herd and still being objective about it.

As for the populism, remember the Tea Party on the right and the Occupy movement on the left both predated him and both were born of the screwing over a lot of people had, after the financial crisis of 07-08, where the degree of outright thievery, of rewriting mortgages, etc, to "foam the runway" for the big banks, with lots of people's savings and houses, while none of the bankers went to jail and most got bonuses, has all been conveniently hidden behind the glossy sheen of Trump. If he hadn't totally unhinged the whole establishment, I'd suspect him of being a plant.

I saw a comment a few days ago, that perfectly encapsulated the civilizational necrosis;

America is a maggot eaten corpse. The Democrats are rooting for the maggots, the Republicans are rooting for the corpse.

The opportunity to start anew is here.

I have written many times on this subject and am astounded the Americans get away with using the Russian and Chinese as the universal scapegoats for its endless evil war mongering. There are many conclusions to be drawn: one being willful ignorance, another deeply embedded endemic racism, pure unadulterated indifference. Also the attitude we have a lily pad existence where what happens over there will not touch us here. You might say those of us in the West suffer an incurable ethnocentrism and don't really give a damn about anything happening outside our borders.

Little do we realize the lily pad is badly blighted.

Imperialism, neocolonialism and fascism are by definition racist.

The people of Eurasia inherited the world's biggest land mass and the fascist elites of the West, being the spiteful children they are, are determined to conquer it as theirs and damn the consequences.

When history is steeped in lies and propaganda we are in very dark times.

"Glenn Greenwald considered this question in a recent segment of System Update. “Russia continues to be the all-purpose villain that Western elites now use whenever they get caught in any sort of scandal, any kind of failure,” he noted. “They immediately point to Russia. They say, ‘It’s not our fault, look over there at the Kremlin.’”

Once upon a time, not so long ago, any development that the establishment of the day didn't like could automatically be blamed on Jews.

Crops failed? Because Jews.

Freak storm sank the royal fleet? Everyone knows that Jews can control the weather. And in fact, Jews often do so, for their own nefarious purposes.

Foreign invasion? Machinations of Jews. Because they hate us for our noble character.

King's eldest son and heir turns out to be a flamboyant homosexual? Jews, you silly goose!

No evidence needed. Because Jews. What, are you on their side?

Today's establishment is far more enlightened. They do not blame unwanted election results and social dissension on Jews. Instead, they blame Russia.

Our media love accusing China of propagandizing, but that overlooks the facts that the Chinese government has never – to my knowledge – lied to its people or broken a promise to them. In 70 years.

That makes 'propaganda' an entirely different matter from the garbage our leaders put out.

The comments are touching on the question as to what is the deeper nature of, not just propaganda, but our belief systems and the cultures they manifest and enable.

My sense it goes to the core of what we are, as thinking beings. That we all exist in this sea of infinite knowledge and the signals we extract from it are those which synchronize with our core knowledge. Even language, not to mention religion, is an aspect of the cultural framework we are born into and grow up in.

As such, it creates this organic super-organism of society.

And the fact is that it has always been this way. Those who go against the common knowledge will have what amounts to the social immune system react to them. Now we talk about canceling, conspiracy theorists, sanctioning, etc. Even simply killing those who question.

Back in the day, you were ostracized and if that didn't work, burned at the stake. Or forced to drink the hemlock, or crucified.

The only real opportunities to really question these beliefs was when they failed and people were cast adrift. Then they start congealing into other forms of communities, around other belief systems, leaders, sources of comfort, energy, etc.

It is safe to say, the old world, especially in the West, is starting to break down in ways no one is really prepared to deal with. The infinite growth model has reached the edge of the petri dish and those currently on top are doing their best to maintain control. Such that it is best not to get in their way and start to develop a more down to earth view of what life can be. Grass roots are where the connections will grow.

For one thing, life is a dance, not a race. We are linear, goal oriented creatures, but this is a cyclical, circular, reciprocal, feedback generated reality and life is short.

Our minds tend to ignore all the things going right, because it's the few things going wrong that will kill us. Yet that's reason to just chill and not have to find answers to everything. We see a lot more that way.

Right now, it doesn't look like the Russians really have that much to fear from us. It's our house that needs to be fixed.

The whole thing is a pack of lies, one of the frauds perpetrated on Earth's humanity, which neither the indoctrinated US populace nor the pro-America people of the world are aware of – which is why all the lowly intelligent, the fake-thinkers, who cheer America and the murderous organisation NATO, are falling for it.

This is despite the fact that America is already in control of many of the world's states, which do as they are told.

Just take the example of Zelensky in Ukraine, who is murdering and destroying according to American models and orders, with weapons and ammunition that are being supplied to the war fanatic Zelensky unthinkingly and irresponsibly as well as criminally by like-minded Americans, whereby, however, thousands of human beings are being murdered.

Billy:

Consequently, all hope for peaceful coexistence between the West and Russia had to be abandoned because Clinton and the Democratic Party, to which he belonged, wanted to impose that Russia be held down by America and never again become a state in the sense of a great power.

This alone according to the shadow government of America that Clinton and his wife Hillary indoctrinated – who even then was keen on the presidency herself – without them noticing anything. Bill and Hillary Clinton were also strongly opposed to Russia finding military integration into NATO, consequently everything failed and all previous efforts went awry that should have led to peace.

So the Democratic Party of America and Bill and Hillary Clinton are the real original culprits that Putin started the war in Ukraine, because their early rejection was the real and true origin of the war that is now raging between Russia and Ukraine.

So the Democratic Party of America, but also mainly the Clintons – and now of course Biden, the senile and ineffectual would-be president of America – bear the real blame for the war in Ukraine.

The Clintons because they were completely misguided at the time about the fact that Russia was only just beginning to take an interest in the democracy of Western countries, which could have led to a real true peace, had not evil prejudice, hatred and rashness destroyed the whole enterprise of lunatics and power-seekers, which other human beings had previously striven to achieve.

The Democratic Party of America and the Clintons and their supporters were and are to blame for torpedoing and frustrating the efforts of those who wanted to ensure that no NATO expansion should take place against the borders of Russia.

America's new leadership thus deviated from what others actually wanted in terms of an emerging peace between East and West, hence America's Democrats and the Clintons are really to blame for Putin unleashing war in Ukraine.

The Democratic Party of America, the two Clintons and now the senile President Biden and the all indoctrinating shadow government of the USA are directing all forces and the cold shoulder against a real and true peace with Russia in order to keep the upper hand worldwide.

America is a 2nd NAZI empire

Contact Report 840

Billy:

But everything is done to conceal the truth and to lift the biggest criminal state on Earth, America, up into the sky.

And this on the one hand because it has already incorporated many states in its hegemonic mania, and on the other hand because America's revenge with its NATO murder organisation is feared, of which Ptaah once said, as by the way did Quetzal and some others, that America is a 2nd NAZI empire.

Florena:

We do indeed judge it in that process, for the drive for hegemony, according to our observations and findings, has been driven with evil since ancient times.

We have witnessed all the horrors of slavery, such as also how tens of thousands of human beings were robbed in Africa and traded and sold as slaves in America, murdered in their thousands, beaten to death, shot, drowned and dragged to death, strangled and massacred, and so on.

We have followed how the indigenous people were persecuted, wars were waged against them and they were tortured and murdered.

And no state on Earth, according to our findings, has waged so many wars and interfered militarily in foreign states' affairs with dastardly murder and war, secret service murder and crime, as well as with racial hatred, in such a way and somehow blindly as America.

And the way America, with its military and so-called 'security forces' and secret services, and in terms of all the intrigues and so forth, has been dedicated to its delusions of hegemony throughout the world since time immemorial, surpasses anything we know of in terms of evil.

I think the elephant in the room is the Federal debt. The banks need it to grow metastatically. The secret sauce of capitalism is public debt backing private wealth.

"The real money is in bonds."

What the political flunkies do with it is their business. Like go play cowboys and indians on the other side of the planet, while the country falls apart.

Then when the interest on that debt can no longer be paid, the bond holders lay claim to whatever public assets their political prostitutes will hand over to them.

When they do it to other countries, it's called "disaster capitalism." When they do it to the poor and the naive, it's called, "predatory lending."

Much of what you say is true, John. I have been saying that what will save the world is the financial collapse of the US. The US will have to roll over a lot of our outstanding debt in 2024. Most of that is at a cost of 1/4–1/2 point. If our current debt had to pay just 3% it would cost us>$1T/yr. We're a train wreck on the way. The world bailed the US out when OPEC jacked the price of oil up beyond what we could afford that's when SDRs were created. That won't happen again.
