Yeeaahh.... God, getting that out was tough. I think your peroration has certain opportunities for improvement as it essentially posits that the past failures of the Democratic party and the past successes of the Republican party came about because the electorate were unhappy with the economic policies of the political party. I have the honor of doubting that. I think there were two "things" that had people upset. One was the tendency of the Democrats (whom I refer to as the paternalistic liberals) to increasingly tightly control the society by way of regulations that took away your ability to do some things. Republicans didn't used to do that. My example here is toilet seats - up or down. Given the rise in the political power of the female, it's amazing to me that the government hasn't addressed it. If the Democrats were to do it, they would create a regulation that toilet bowls had to be made with a non movable toilet bowl seat. If the Republicans were to do it, they would make it illegal to leave the seat up, punishable by 6 months in the can and $1,000 fine.

The second thing had people, well rich people anyway, upset was the top marginal tax rate. The thing that distinguishes rich people is that they have a lot of money that they can use to buy legislators. The thing about the top marginal rate when it's high enough is that it effectively creates a national maximum wage.

I would posit that the economic philosophy isn't what motivates most and that the Democrats have become a second "anything the rich want" party and the Republicans never stopped being the anything the rich want party. Labor is just screwed.
