I'm reminded of the words of that notorious liberal, Barry Goldwater =
"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them."
Not only have they largely succeeded while the country as a whole has continued to move away from obeisance to a mythical sky pilot but they've paired it with incompetence for a true devil's brew.
I don't know enough about Gerson to say specifically one way or the other, but I suspect many of the neocon theocons use God as an excuse, especially since "God on our side"
